Underperforming For Years

OUR SECOND FINAL EPISODE: After over a month (hell, almost two months), and a lot of discussion and, yes, even one failed attempt, our hosts return! However, they bring with them the news that this episode will be the final regular episode of A Podcast [ , ] For All Intents and Purposes. After eleven years, priorities have changed and, you know, things have changed that caused our hosts to reconsider their priorities and take inventory.

It isn't good-bye, necessarily. They have the tools to reconvene whenever they want, but it won't be on a regular schedule. So, our hosts make their last official recording a chance to reflect, discuss, and confirm that they never became more than your 14th source for all nerdy and geeky news and discussion.

WEEK IN GEEK: Our hosts decide to end as they began with their respective Weeks in Geek. This week, Andrew finally begins watching season two of the Disney+/Star Wars show, Andor, while D. Bethel gets lost in the beauty and poetic carnage of Ghost of Yotei.

FINAL THOUGHTS: This show has been a genuine product of two old friends needing an excuse (before realizing they didn't need an excuse) to hang out every week and have overly-thoughtful conversations about nerdy and geeky things. However, our road has been paved by a variety of souls that were kind enough to lend their personalities and discussion to our uploads. As things draw to a close, we would like to thank the following (in no particular order): Taylor Katcher, Kyrun Silva, Jake Waltier, Luke Terpeinen, Nicole Jekich, Jacqueline Nolis, André La Roche, Elijah Kaine, Josh Tobey, Mary Traverse, and even more friends who have joined our ranks along the way. Thank you for helping us build our voice within the nerd discourse and for allowing us to platform yours along the way.

SILKSONG OF SILENCE: The highly anticipated follow-up to the 2D Metroidvania, Hollow Knight, released on Thursday, September 4, and was so popular that all major digital storefronts collapsed under the demand for the game.

RETCON WHERE NO ONE HAS RETCONNED BEFORE: With Star Trek: Strange New Worlds dipping into the continuity of the original series, D. Bethel went even deeper and watched first-season episode of the original series, "The Menagerie, Part 1 & 2," to see the original (or second original appearance?) of Captain Pike and finds a lot to like and even more to admire.

THE THING ABOUT THE THING: D. Bethel rounds out the episode talking about his experience reading the novella, Who Goes There?, by John W. Campbell, which served as the basis for one of his favorite films, John Carpenter's The Thing, and was surprised at how faithful that adaptation was.

Andrew Day

HE'S THE ONE THAT SITS: Our hosts start with the sadness and address the recent passing of actor George Wendt, whose Cheers character, Norm Peterson, (along with his bar buddy, Cliff Claven, played by John Ratzenberger) really resonated with viewers as the quintessential everyman.

THE WALKINGS DEAD: A kind of two-in-one, Andrew takes inspiration for his own short campaign of the tabletop RPG of The Walking Dead by starting to watch the first spinoff show, Fear the Walking Dead, due to its setting on the west coast of the United States.

THE LEGACY OF PIP & JANE BAKER: Our hosts wrap by discussing a short lived and *possibly* relevant character to the new season of Doctor Who, the malevolent Time Lady, The Rani.

RIDICULOUS REMAKES: D. Bethel goes off on "live action" remakes of beloved animated movies––Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon––that genuinely seem unnecessary.

Theme Song Detectives

It's been nearly a month with lots of things happening, under our hosts' control and not, but they check back in this week with some overview of life stuff as well as nerdy and geeky stuff.

WEEKS IN GEEK: Andrew finds a lot to like in the recent MCU-Disney+ show, Daredevil: Born Again, continuing the series from its run on Netflix. He also returns to survival gaming with Far From Home's Forever Skies. D. Bethel dips into new old sci-fi with the well-regarded series, The Expanse, but has been occupying his gaming time with Machinegames' Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

LONG LIVE THE QUEEN: The show wraps with a short remembrance of Jean Marsh, an incredibly expressive actress whose career ran decades. Our hosts, of course, remember her fondly for her dips into Doctor Who across the years (she even used to be married to the Third Doctor, Jon Pertwee) as well as her turn as the unforgettable villain, Queen Bavmorda, in Willow.

TOPICS:

Then, Andrew returns to talk about something new: the Backerkit campaign for the classic tabletop RPG, Ars Magica, and how it's promising to release this new edition in the Creative Commons.

Extra Obnoxious Protocol

COVID-INDUCED ANIME: There was no episode last week because D. Bethel got sick with the new strain of COVID. Though his symptoms were mild, the biggest side effect was probably the most troubling: he watched anime. Specifically, he watched the 12 episode series, Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team and realized that mechs are cool.

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC: A very strange news story happened in the comics world this month when Fables creator and writer Bill Willingham announced that, due to the frustrating relationship that had developed with DC Comics over how they were handling his creator-owned property, that he put Fables into the public domain. Our hosts discuss what exactly that means, how it works, and if it's even possible.

Space Man From Pluto

SECRET INVASION...OF A.I.: Marvel seems to have hamstrung the release of its new Disney+ series, Secret Invasion, when viewers quickly noticed the apparent artlessness of the show's opening credits and that they seemed to have used A.I. engines to create it instead of, you know, any of the artists it employs.

STIFLED PRODIGY: Paramount+ has been on a Star Trek kick for the last few years, but all might not be as rosy at it seems. Not only has it cancelled the all-ages-aimed animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy, it has also removed all the episodes from their proprietary streaming service––even though season 2 is wrapping production.

A BEAST OF A SURPRISE: D. Bethel takes a moment to discuss Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and how it pleasantly surprises in terms of actually being a good Transformers movie (who knew?).

TOPICS:

(00:00) Intro - June has, indeed, been busy

(01:39) Secret Invasion's AI-generated opening credits.

(13:45) Paramount+ cancels Star Trek: Prodigy
