WEEK IN GEEK: In honor of the 53rd anniversary of the show, Andrew watched the 1970s Doctor Who serial, "Day of the Daleks," and follows that up with the new timey-wimey show, Timeless. Dan gets nostalgic to re-read X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills by Chris Claremont and Brent Anderson and finds, to his estimation, that it holds up rather well. WAR KIND OF CHANGES: Andrew picks up Fallout 4 on PS4 and talks about what he's seeing with Dan, who still hasn't beaten it. THE CRAFT OF CRAFTING: Building off of Fallout 4's systems, Dan and Andrew talk about the rise of crafting mechanics in video games, from Minecraft to Diablo II to Skyrim. WEEK IN GEEK: Andrew finally sat down and saw Marvel's newest edition to its cinematic universe, Doctor Strange, while Dan sits down and replays the opening of Mass Effect 2. BETWEEN TWO WORLDS: After being pushed back in the movie schedule before getting removed completely, The Inhumans finally gets a release date...on television...kind of. While it's premiere will be in IMAX theaters for a few weeks, Marvel announced that a The Inhumans tv show will air on ABC alongside Agents of SHIELD. Dan and Andrew talk about this newest plan and what it says about the static between Marvel's movie house and television studios. NEW WHO, IN COLOR: The Second Doctor's premiere story, "The Power of the Daleks," is getting a DVD release in fully animated form (due to the original episodes getting wiped by the BBC in the 1970s), but more interestingly the release will be getting an extra feature of the whole story in color. Andrew and Dan discuss this feature as well as the state of missing Doctor Who, based on the News Blast Andrew wrote about this announcement. Leave your thoughts as comments at forallintents.net. WEEK IN GEEK: Andrew played DC Legends as well as Peter Molyneux's new mobile game, The Trail while Dan got sentimental up reading Prophet: Earth War issue number 6, which finally wraps up the big Prophet reboot. REMEMBER, REMEMBER: Though Dan and Andrew missed November 5th to properly discuss V for Vendetta, in the eyes of some Americans, the country did us a solid by possibly setting up a situation where that story could happen for real. They discuss V for Vendetta's relative applicability in terms of the comic, the films 2005 release, and 2016 America. Being an Alan Moore book and with the recent elections so near, politics are discussed but––with hope––done so through a critical lens and as it applies to nerdy stuff. WEEK IN GEEK: Andrew wades through the neck-deep waters of Civilization VI and loves every second of it while D. Bethel watches the crowd-funded fan film, Cable: Chronicles of Hope by K&K Productions. WHAT'S NEXT?: Considering the imminent political event happening in the United States of America, Dan and Andrew examine how television has taken a look at the presidency by comparing and contrasting the pilot episodes (mostly) of The West Wing and House of Cards (though they specifically already discussed the House of Cards pilot in Episode 37). INFINITE CRISES IN INFINITE MOVIES: This week, news hit that director Rick Famuyiwa left the DC/Warner Bros. film, The Flash, late into pre-production. This is the second director to leave the project, and the third to leave a film set in the DC Universe established with 2013's Man of Steel (before this, Michelle MacLaren left Wonder Woman). Andrew and Dan examine the state of the DC Universe movies and wonder what the outcome may be for this grand experiment. Referenced in this segment is the Ghostbusters v. Star Trek Beyond discussion from Episode 101, if you want background on that controversy. Again, D. Bethel's webcomic, Long John, has finished up its second chapter. I KNOW THAT VOICE: A week ago, voice actors in the SAG-AFTRA union strike against major video game developers in the hopes of renegotiating contracts for voice acting in video games. Dan and Andrew investigate. SWITCHEROO: Nintendo released a trailer for their long-speculated, highly anticipated new console, the Nintendo Switch. WEEK IN GEEK: Andrew attends Geek Girl Con 2016 and relays some of his experience to the show while Dan gets freaked the eff out while playing INSIDE, the latest from Playdead, makers of LIMBO. OLD SEGMENT UPDATE: Back in Shortcast 14, Andrew and Dan discussed a fairly quiet lawsuit that Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering publisher, Wizards of the Coast, was confronting with regard to the employment and compensation status of its Magic: The Gathering judges. Andrew did some digging and gives the latest in this ongoing dispute, as well as what to expect next. THE POINT OF THE FLASH: The team brings on a new voice in the form of Taylor Katcher, of Comic Chat with Gat and The Cardboard Box, to talk about DC Comics, specifically The Flash and the seminal crossover event, "Flashpoint." This storyline served as the basis for The Flash season 3 premiere and seems to be having some long-term ramifications for the rest of the season, but in ways that significantly differ from their comic source. WEEK IN GEEK: Andrew started playing World of Warcraft...again while Dan sees a trailer for Steven Okazaki's documentary, Mifune: The Last Samurai, and they talk about killing your idols. TOO OLD FOR THIS SHIT?: Dan and Andrew examine the sudden and growing trend of bringing back notable 1980s' franchises back for modern audiences...but on television. Lethal Weapon, The Exorcist, MacGuyver, and even Magnum P.I. are heading to television. What does it mean? What can we expect? Can they be any good (were they any good in the first place)? ROBOTS IN DISGUISE: Since he started uploading Let's Play videos, Andrew has run into the static generated by YouTube's content monitoring algorithms, which take down videos that may have copyrighted audio embedded in the video. They talk about this trend and how its damages may extend much further than lost revenue for both YouTube streamers and copyright holders. WEEK IN GEEK: Andrew bides his time until Civilization VI releases by playing a bunch of Blizzard games while Dan swims through the lush animation and Old Norse world of Thunder Lotus Games' Jotun. NEWS BLAST - UPDATE - METAL GEAR SURVIVE: Metal Gear series creator and famous non-employee of Konami, Hideo Kojima, boldly said that he has nothing to do with Konami's upcoming Metal Gear Solid V spinoff, Metal Gear Survive, on stage at this years Tokyo Game Show. Konami retaliated by releasing approximately fifteen minutes of co-op gameplay to a rather tepid response. LEGACY CHARACTERS 2.0: Building off of the previous conversations about "legacy characters"––superhero mantles that can be passed from person to person rather than being locked to a single identity––in Episode 09 and, tangentially, in Episode 104, Dan and Andrew return to the topic now that the world has a new Superman––officially New Super-Man––and recent Legacy turns with Wolverine and the use of a Legacy character in Marvel's Agents of SHIELD: Ghost Rider v3.0, Robby Reyes. THAT'S EDUTAINMENT: Inspired by Japanese: The Game card game Andrew saw at PAX West, Dan and Andrew talk about games made with education in mind. Games like Oregon Trail and Where in the X is Carmen San Diego? are classic examples of educational games done right––fun games that make a cultural impact. WEEK IN GEEK: Andrew builds a new gaming PC while Dan plays Batman: The Telltale Series - "Episode 1: Realm of Shadows." SPOILERS REDUX AND DMCA C&D: Dan and Andrew's discussion was initiated by a post over at the AV Club that covered an instance where major television network, AMC, issued a cease and desist order to a Walking Dead fan site, The Spoiling Dead Fans, when they started listing potential spoilers to the next season's premier. It's a broad topic that is hard to talk about (and, at times, infuriating), but they do their best to really take this topic apart as it relates to television shows and the networks' loyalty to their paying advertisers. WEEK IN GEEK: Andrew recovers from his serious bout of time-travel last week by watching Wil Wheaton's tabletop adventure, Titansgrave: The Ashes of Volkana while Dan finds room on the bandwagon to jump on and start watching Netflix's Stranger Things. SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECY?: Even though DC/Warner Bros.' Suicide Squad only hit theaters today, audiences at premier screenings have been walking away less than happy, possibly sounding a cloister bell for the cinematic universe they've been trying to build since Man of Steel. Dan and Andrew investigate how the fate of this movie may influence future DC/Warner Bros. entries. STATISTICS AND RHETORIC: Unintentionally hitting both Andrew and Dan's wheelhouses, they examine a controversy that surfaced on the Manfeels Park blog where the author examined the strange disparity in the language around the interpretation of box office returns for both Ghostbusters and Star Trek Beyond. Despite having similar budgets and similar opening weekend numbers, Ghostbusters was declared by some to be a disaster for Paramount, while Star Trek's similar numbers were hailed as being a great success. WEEK IN GEEK: Andrew spent his week diving deeper into the Lego muck and mire, watching a bit of the Lego Ninjago animated series in order to get some more context to the more esoteric Lego Dimensions levels he has encountered.. Dan didn't stray to far, playing Resident Evil 7: Beginning Hour, the proof-of-concept demo for Capcom's sequel Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (or Biohazard 7: Resident Evil in Japan). MAKING UP WORDS: In the first look at mobile gaming this week, Dan and Andrew talk about a game that seems to be made just for them, Square Enix and A-Lim's Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and how it scratches certain itches while causing others. POKE MONGO: Pokémon Go is just about the biggest thing in the world right now, topping the charts of the iTunes free apps and is, purportedly, even bigger than porn with Google searches. Week in Geek: Andrew spends some time in Portland, Oregon and hangs out at one of its popular gamer bars, Ground Control. Dan reads Marvel's 2014 mini-series, Deadpool vs. X-Force and really enjoys some clever meta-retcon that happens. Narrative Bifurcation: Dan and Andrew discuss some of the possibilities brought on by Nintendo's very interesting release of Fire Emblem Fate, which is actually two full-priced releases, Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest. Even then, the ostensible ending is only available via paid-DLC (titled Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation). It's a dangerous tactic, but can be used for good as well. Bye Bye Bioware: Over the last few years, major players at famed video game developer, Bioware, have been hemorrhaging from the company at a surprising rate. We talk about how much they like each other. Week in Geek: Andrew plays Assassin's Creed Chronicles: India while Dan watches Ex Machina. Cheap Games: With Andrew's sideways foray into the normally "AAA" Assassin's Creed franchise being through the door of a $10 downloadable game, Dan and Andrew discuss the recent widening of prices for games––both video and tabletop––and the implications on not only the content but the culture it feeds. Flash in the Pan/The Doctor is Out: In unrelated but nearly simultaneous announcements, CBS/CW and BBC announced they are pulling their respective content from the media hubs of Netflix and Hulu, presumably because they are going to launch their own premium streaming services.
